Motherhood is filled with interesting moments. Moments that give you gray hairs. Yesterday afternoon was one of them…

Munchkin informed me that she had put a tiny plastic bead up her nose. She tried to get it out, but it only got pushed up further. Then it disappeared. I couldn’t see this bead (about 3mm in diameter) and blowing her nose wasn’t doing anything to help. She was breathing just fine, so I wasn’t TOO panicked, but I was a bit freaked out by the thought of a plastic object inside my daughter’s nose. She picked up on that and became rather scared herself. I managed to calm myself down and get her calmed down as well. Since Aaron was at work, I called my mother-in-law and asked her to give us a ride out to the doctor’s office. She was wonderful about the whole thing and took the two boys to her house while Munchkin and I went to see the doctor. Aaron was able to meet us there too, which I was so thankful for! I’m always glad to have his support in these situations! Anyway, it turned out that they couldn’t find the bead. They told us that it likely fell out or wound up getting swallowed. There is a very remote chance that it could be stuck somewhere, but the doctor advised us about what to watch for in that case. Munchkin assured us that she has learned her lesson and will not put anything in her nose again!

Despite the initial reason for us being out with all three kids, the evening turned out to be a chance for us to visit with Aaron’s parents. We enjoyed spending some time with them and the kids loved visiting with Grandma and Grandpa!

I realize that getting something stuck up your nose isn’t exactly unusual for younger kids. Even so, a part of me wished that my Mom was still here to assure me that, yes, kids do these sorts of things, and that it doesn’t mean that I’m a terrible mother. Most of all, I miss her hugging me and telling me that this is why mothers get gray hairs!
