Daybook for October 7th

Outside my window… it’s rainy and cold. The leaves seem to be past their peek now.

I am thinking… about learning calculus and physics. I regret taking chemistry instead of physics in high school, and I’ve decided that there’s no reason why I can’t learn it now. If anyone has any good book recommendations for learning calculus or physics please do let me know!

I am thankful for… a coal stove that keeps our home warm, and the fabulous new 3-hole paper punch that Aaron’s mom gave me at the start of this school year. (Never underestimate the value of a good 3-hole punch when homeschooling.)

From the learning rooms… last week before our week off. Looking back, I’m pretty happy with our book and curriculum choices this year. The kids are enjoying the new spelling practice app that we’ve been using. It’s definitely a keeper!

From the kitchen… English muffin bread is in the oven again. It’s one of the kids’ favorite kinds of bread, and I appreciate how quick and easy it is to make.

I am wearing… jeans, a grey long-sleeve tee, and the trusty purple crocs have been exchanged for my favorite LL Bean shoes.

I am creating… dishcloths for Christmas. Mom used to knit so many of these for gifts!

I am going… to have to go to the grocery store by the end of the week. It’s amazing how much food four growing kids can go through. (Yes, I’ve heard it will be even worse once they are all teenagers…)

I am reading… The Quarryman’s Bride. I should be finished with it this week so that I can write up my review. I haven’t done as much reading this past week because I’ve had to put in a little extra writing time.

I am hoping… that we get some good photography weather this week. My IT staff isn’t just a computer wizard, he’s also a fabulous photographer. He’s hoping for good night photography weather sometime this week.

I am hearing… We Dream of a Kingdom by Greg Long. I listened to his albums quite a bit when I was a teenager, and I’ve been listening to them again this weekend while writing.

Pondering these words… “I know very little about how this story was born. That is, I don’t know where the pictures came from. And I don’t believe anyone knows exactly how he ‘makes things up.’ Making up is a very mysterious thing. When you ‘have an idea,’ could you tell anyone exactly how you thought of it?” – CS Lewis

Around the house… Munchkin made a LEGO pizza, Mr. Q and Camo made an indoor golf game, and Little Guy is happily playing with his wooden puzzle. Their creativity amazes and delights me!

One of my favorite things… is listening to my kids’ conversations while playing. Munchkin: We’re not going to make it! Mr. Q: Nonsense!

A few plans for the rest of the week: Reading, writing, laundry, and exploring the Khan Academy physics videos.

Daybook for September 9th

Outside my window… it’s sunny and beautiful, and the fall air is crisp.

I am thinking… about story ideas, though I have plenty of other projects to focus on. I’ve learned some new things about a character this week. Of course, I sound crazy when I say things like that.

I am thankful for… the chance to snuggle up with my kids and enjoy a DVD. Their observations and commentary on a movie is certainly entertaining too!

From the learning rooms… Our first week went well! I think we all like the books that we’re using this year.

From the kitchen… I made a batch of molasses cookies yesterday. The kiddos have assured me that I’m a good cookie baker.

I am wearing… jeans and a red cabled sweater that I finished knitting this summer. I’ve been waiting for cooler weather so that I could finally wear it.

I am creating… another sweater. I had to frog (knitter’s term for unravel) a sweater that was nearly done because I had knit the wrong size.

I am going… to need to decide what to do with my hair this week. I’ve been coloring it this summer, but I can’t decide whether or not to keep up with it.

I am reading… Numb. Actually, I started and finished it this past week. It was a really intriguing science fiction novel. I’m still mulling over what I read, so I know it was a good book!

I am hoping… that my IT staff gets home this afternoon. I’m not expecting him back from his trip until this evening, but it would be nice to see him a bit earlier than expected.

I am hearing… kiddos playing in the next room, and Aiwendil chirping away.

Pondering these words… “What a cruel thing war is… to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors.” – Robert E. Lee

Around the house… I think I may have to pull out the kids’ fall clothes this week.

One of my favorite things… is my toddler holding out his arms and saying, “Mama, HUG!”

A few plans for the rest of the week: School, writing, laundry, and coming up with a good cake idea for my sister’s birthday.

Daybook for August 26th

Outside my window… it’s starting to cool down a bit. I actually like fall, so I’m looking forward to the change in seasons.

I am thinking… about upcoming writing projects.

I am thankful for… the cute IT guy whose desk is next to mine.

From the learning rooms… last week before New Book Day! It’s been nice to have about a month off.

From the kitchen… cinnamon rolls and Earl Grey tea this morning.

I am wearing… jeans, my Doctor Hoo owl t-shirt, and Aaron’s denim shirt. (Yes, I probably wear it more than he does!)

I am creating… sweaters and mittens. When it gets chilly, I’ll be ready.

I am going… to need a lot of tea this week!

I am reading… I’m actually deciding what to read next. So many books on the list…

I am hoping… that a few things work themselves out soon.

I am hearing… Aiwendil chirping away in the next room. It’s nice having a bird around.

Pondering these words… “There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing.” – Aristotle

Around the house… kids are playing games, the toddler is napping, and that cute IT guy is editing photos of airplanes. (I keep sneaking a peek over his shoulder!)

One of my favorite things… is painting my nails a pretty color, even though it will be chipped to pieces within a couple of days.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Time to finish setting the school/dining room to rights!

Daybook for August 19th

Outside my window… blue skies and puffy, white clouds. It’s a lovely August day, and the kiddos are outside enjoying it.

I am thinking… about too many things. This month I’ve been trying to just take a step back and take a break. Then I’ll be ready to tackle September!

I am thankful for… a wonderful mother-in-law who is so supportive of homeschooling! She’s a tremendous help and encouragement to me.

From the learning rooms… new books came in the mail this week! A brand-new elementary science curriculum from Dr. Jay Wile, and Life of Fred. Yes! There will be reviews of both coming up on the HEDUA review site!

From the kitchen… a hot day equals a smoothie for lunch.

I am wearing… grey shorts and a purple t-shirt.

I am creating… well, I finished a sweater this week for myself. It’s a nice ¾ sleeve cardigan that will be good for fall.

I am going… to enjoy what little time I have left to open windows and let the fresh, evening air in.

I am reading… through curriculum and other school-related stuff this week.

I am hoping… to squeeze in a couple of fun things with the kids this weekend. Maybe we’ll all snuggle in our PJs and watch a movie together.

I am hearing… just the hum of the computers in the office. Little Guy is napping and the big kids are playing outside, so it’s very quiet in the house right now.

Pondering these words… “When your student has a question that you can’t answer, don’t be afraid! See it as an opportunity to do what real scientists do – discover the answer for yourselves.” – Dr. Jay Wile

Around the house… the printer is printing, binders are being filled, pencils sharpened, school boxes being stocked, and amidst it all I’m still going to enjoy our last two weeks off.

One of my favorite things… is my new 3-hole punch. It is so nice to have one that will punch more than two sheets at a time!

A few plans for the rest of the week: a bit more preparation for New Book Day and laundry of course.

Daybook for August 13th

Outside my window… there may be an 80% chance of rain, but it’s sure sunny right now.

I am thinking… about checking on the kids’ pool, but the snakes the kids keep seeing in the back yard are making me rather hesitant to venture out.

I am thankful for… a desk next to Aaron’s.

From the learning rooms… Is it really only a few weeks till New Book Day? Slightly overwhelming…

From the kitchen… the kettle is on because I need some tea! Decaf Lady Grey this morning I think.

I am wearing… grey shorts and a Red Sox t-shirt.

I am creating… one of those rice-filled pillow stands for tablets and working on a cardigan for this fall.

I am going… to be doing some final edits on writing projects today. *makes face* There’s a reason why I’m not a copy editor, and a very good reason why I’m thankful for the ones who edit my writing!

I am reading… the kids’ science books. Of course, the short lesson on nuclear power sent me off on a long research tangent and prompted a discussion with my IT staff.

I am hoping… that we can just pretend it’s actually Monday, and that I got this post up in a timely fashion.

I am hearing… You’re the Inspiration by Chicago. Guess I’m feeling nostalgic this morning. A Chicago CD was the first birthday present that Aaron ever gave me.

Pondering these words… “When I graduated from High School… I couldn’t go to college, so I went to the library three days a week for 10 years.” – Ray Bradbury

Around the house… it’s time to get the dining/learning/piano room ready for the fall.

One of my favorite things… is listening to music while I’m writing.

A few plans for the rest of the week: I’ll be finishing writing projects, sorting and reading school books, weeding though the stack of papers that have accumulated, and of course, laundry!

Daybook for August 5th

Outside my window… it’s been alternately sunny, cloudy, rainy, and windy today. Just your typical weather in Maine!

I am thinking… “Why is the cordless phone from the office in a basket in the living room?”

I am thankful for… cooler days and crisp night air.

From the learning rooms… we’re on break until the first of September. My mind is spinning just thinking of all I have to get done by then!

From the kitchen… pizza dough is rising. I have to make two big pizzas now to feed all of us.

I am wearing… jeans and a purple t-shirt. (It matches my trusty purple crocs quite well!)

I am creating… radiator covers. Actually, I just finished them, and so it’s on to writing catch-up.

I am going… to stay home this week, and hopefully get a lot crossed off the to-do list.

I am reading… Back to Homeschool. With less than a month before “school” starts it’s time to gear up.

I am hoping… to find something in the fridge for pizza toppings that is different but will be well-liked.

I am hearing… LEGOs rattling, and fantastical tales made up by the kiddos about their LEGO creations.

Pondering these words… “The world can be amazing when you’re slightly strange.” – Unknown

Around the house… the last of the plants I tried growing inside are dead. I’m just not meant to have houseplants…

One of my favorite things… is hearing my daughter say things like, “It floats because it has a lot of volume, but not much density.” And when I asked Munchkin why she used those particular terms she shrugged and replied, “I just read it in a book.”

A few plans for the rest of the week: Writing catch-up, school planning, and laundry of course!

Daybook for July 29th

Outside my window… It looks like it will rain any minute now. The cooler temps lately have been welcome though.

I am thinking… about some of my upcoming writing projects. I’m really excited about them! It’s hard work writing, but just because something is hard work doesn’t mean that it’s not satisfying.

I am thankful for… things changing. As much as I resist and dislike change, I don’t think I’d really want things to always stay the same either.

From the learning rooms… I’ve been wearing out my three-hole punch and organizing papers in three-ring binders this week. I also love putting together the kids’ school boxes. It’s so much fun to pick out something special for each of them.

From the kitchen… a dozen vanilla cupcakes with coffee buttercream frosting are sitting in my fridge.

I am wearing… tan capris and a pumpkin orange t-shirt. No, I don’t think they clash horribly with my trusty purple crocs. Everything matches my crocs!

I am creating… dishcloths lately, because summer is not the time to have a heap of wool knitting on your lap!

I am going… to be a year older tomorrow, but since my daughter declared me “very, very old” when I was still in my 20s I guess it doesn’t matter.

I am reading… Unrivaled by Siri Mitchell. It’s a historical fiction novel for review. It piqued my interest because candy making figures heavily into the story. I have very fond memories of making candy with my great-aunts.

I am hoping… that I can resist the temptation of those 12 tasty-looking cupcakes in the fridge until tomorrow. Yes, I’m just as impatient as my kids!

I am hearing… LEGOs and kids chatting. It’s fairly quiet because Little Guy is snuggled in his crib napping.

Pondering these words… “I’ve never been so comfortable before. Oh, I’m so glad that I’m not young anymore!” – From the musical Gigi

Around the house… So much to do before September! I should probably pick an official date for “New Book Day”.

One of my favorite things… spray paint. Seriously. Spray paint is like a magic wand that can make an old piece of furniture, frame, tin, etc. look fabulous again!

A few plans for the rest of the week: Eating cupcakes and coffee ice cream while singing, “I’m so glad that I’m not young anymore!”

For more daybooks, please visit The Simple Woman’s Daybook.

Daybook for July 8th

Outside my window… it’s overcast this morning and raining off and on, but the below 70 temperature this morning feels amazing!

I am thinking… about what needs to change, and what I can’t change. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference.

I am thankful for… fresh, cool air fluttering the curtains.

From the learning rooms… we have about a month of light studying to do and then we’ll take a few weeks off before the start of the next school year.

From the kitchen… it’s been too hot to do much cooking, but maybe today I’ll actually bake some bread.

I am wearing… tan capri pants and a bright pink top. (With my trusty purple crocs of course!)

I am creating… a cable knit sleeve for an electronic device with a story behind it. I’ll write up a post with that story later.

I am going… to be doing a big grocery shopping trip this week. Time to get the coupons out and make a list.

I am reading… Red Dawn Rising. It’s the sequel to The Sound of Red Returning. You can read my review of the first book by clicking here.

I am hoping… to make progress on several projects this week.

I am hearing… a toddler running around in the living room and LEGOs being played with in the dining room.

Pondering these words… “You have 25% of your children’s lives to prepare them for the remaining 75%. Use the time wisely.” – Amanda Bennett

Around the house… I’m considering how to best put up a clothesline. There is nothing like the fresh smell of line-dried clothes!

One of my favorite things… was celebrating my in-law’s 40th anniversary with them this past weekend. We enjoy spending time with them anyway, and this was definitely a cause for celebration!

A few plans for the rest of the week: Lots of writing on the schedule! Lesson planning, and of course laundry!
