Book Review: Issym

I’m a writer. Not yet a published author though. I have friends who are incredibly talented authors, and it gives me a particular thrill when one of them is published! They have accomplished something incredible that I still only aspire to! I’m amazed by the hard work and the sheer amount of time that they invest in writing and publishing a book. And I can hardly wait to get my hands on a copy of their book!

I’ve just finished reading a book written by a friend of ours, and as soon as I put it down, I knew that I had to write a review on my blog! The book is titled Issym and was written by Jessie Mae Hodsdon.

Do you remember the imaginative play that you engaged in as a child? What if the fairy-tale world created in the mind of a child really did exist somewhere? That’s exactly what happened to Rachel and Seth, the two main characters of the story. Now teenagers, they find themselves unexpectedly in a world whose existence they can’t explain. A world populated by beings they themselves imagined. Before they can even begin to grasp that fact, they are caught up in the struggle between the inhabitants of Issym and the dragon Smolden and his army of followers. Rachel and Seth just want to go home, but they may be forced to choose a side in the coming battle.

Issym is a fantasy book in the same genre as The Chronicles of Narnia and The Hobbit. Teenagers are the intended audience, but it is an enjoyable read for both younger and older audiences. Written in an easy-to-read, yet always interesting style, Jessie’s book appeals to a wide age-range. The plot is solid, and the characters believable. Fantasy and sci-fi are two genres where a good, Christian novel is hard to find. I’m happy to say that with the publication of Issym there is one more good, Christian fantasy novel out there to choose from! The only thing that I did not enjoy about the book, was the realization that I have to wait for book two to be published before I can continue reading the series!

Jessie Mae Hodsdon is an author whose works I will follow with great interest, not only because she is a friend, but because she is a talented author!

If you are interested in purchasing your own copy of Issym, you may visit the Issym website, and click on the “Order Issym” tab at the top of the page. If you have tweens or teens in your house, I highly recommend this book for them. You might just want to consider buying two copies though, since you will definitely want to read it yourself!
